To equip students with the fundamental skills and techniques of pen and ink architectural sketching, enabling them to confidently render architectural views with dip pens.
Beginner to intermediate students interested in exploring pen and ink drawing, particularly for architectural subjects.
1: Introduction to Pen & Ink
History and evolution of pen and ink drawings
Choosing the right tools: Dip pens, inks, paper types
Understanding pen mechanics and basic strokes
Warm-up exercises and developing pen control
2: Essential Techniques & Exercises
Mastering fundamental ink strokes ( hatching, cross-hatching, stippling ect .)
Creating tonal values and textures with ink variations
Experimenting with line weight and density for emphasis
Practice exercises focusing on lines, textures, and light & shadow
3: Perspective for Architectural Sketching
One-point, two-point, and three-point perspective basics
Applying perspective principles to architectural elements
Constructing various forms and structures in perspective
Exercises in perspective drawing with architectural subjects
4: Composition & Sketching Strategies
Understanding composition principles for impactful sketches
Leading the viewer’s eye, balance, and focal points
Thumbnail sketching for planning compositions
Developing observational drawing skills for architectural details
5: Architectural Elements & Rendering Techniques
Drawing common architectural elements: Doors, windows, columns, arches
Rendering different building materials: Brick, stone, wood, glass ect .
Capturing light and shadow on architectural forms
Exercises in detailed architectural sketching
6: From Basics to Freedom
Experimenting with personal style and creative expression
Applying learned techniques to diverse architectural subjects
Developing a personal visual language in pen and ink
Group critiques and feedback sessions
8: Final Project
Creating a final pen and ink architectural sketch series (10 sketches ) using learned skills
Online Presentation and critique of final projects
